What is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to permanently reduce moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. Its active ingredient, synthetic deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule that helps break down fat. Once injected, KYBELLA® permanently destroys targeted fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by your body over the following weeks.
What can KYBELLA® treat?
KYBELLA® is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe fat beneath the chin.
Experienced medical providers may also use deoxycholic acid off-label in carefully selected patients to treat other small, localized pockets of stubborn fat, such as:
- Bra fat
- Fat above the knees
- Small pockets of fat near the underarms
- Other localized treatment areas when appropriate
Because these are off-label uses, not every patient or treatment area is appropriate for treatment. During your consultation, we’ll determine whether KYBELLA® or another procedure is the best option for your goals.
How do I know if I'm a candidate?
We love to start with a consultation. Your provider will evaluate the treatment area, the amount of localized fat, your skin quality, your anatomy, and your aesthetic goals.
Sometimes KYBELLA® is the ideal solution. Other times, another treatment such as medical weight loss, collagen stimulation, skin tightening, or a combination approach may provide a better result. We’ll always recommend the treatment that’s right for you—not simply the treatment you came in asking about.
How long does treatment take?
Most appointments take about 20 to 30 minutes.
Does KYBELLA® hurt?
Most patients describe a temporary burning or stinging sensation during treatment followed by tenderness for several days. For additional comfort, we offer Pro-Nox™ during treatment.
What is the downtime?
Swelling is an expected part of the treatment process and is often most noticeable during the first several days. Bruising, tenderness, firmness, and temporary numbness are also common.
Most patients return to normal activities immediately, although many choose to schedule treatment before a long weekend or lighter social schedule.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients need 2 to 4 treatments, although this varies depending on the treatment area and the amount of localized fat. Treatments are typically spaced at least one month apart.
When will I see results?
KYBELLA® works gradually. As your body naturally clears the treated fat cells over several weeks, you’ll begin noticing improvement. Results continue to develop after each treatment session.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. Once KYBELLA® destroys treated fat cells, they are permanently eliminated and cannot store or accumulate fat again. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results.
Can KYBELLA® tighten loose skin?
No. KYBELLA® permanently reduces localized fat but does not tighten loose skin. If skin laxity is contributing to your concerns, we’ll discuss other treatment options that may better achieve your goals.
Can KYBELLA® treat areas other than beneath the chin?
Yes, in select cases. While KYBELLA® is FDA-approved only for fat beneath the chin, experienced providers may use deoxycholic acid off-label to treat other small, localized pockets of stubborn fat. During your consultation, we’ll determine whether you’re an appropriate candidate and discuss all available treatment options.
