Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Back Facial?

A Back Facial is a professional skincare treatment that applies many of the same techniques used in a traditional facial to the back, shoulders, and upper trunk. It deeply cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates, and treats common concerns such as congestion, acne, rough texture, and dryness.

What concerns can a Back Facial help improve?

This treatment may help improve:

  • Back acne (“bacne”)
  • Congested pores and blackheads
  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Dry or flaky skin
  • Oily skin
  • Post-workout buildup
  • Skin preparation before vacations, weddings, dances, or other special events
What happens during the treatment?

Every Back Facial is customized based on your skin analysis. Your treatment may include:

  • Double cleanse with warm steam towels
  • Professional exfoliation
  • Gentle extractions, if needed
  • Customized treatment mask
  • Relaxing therapeutic massage
  • Frozen globe therapy for inflamed skin when appropriate
  • High-frequency treatment for active blemishes
  • Professional hydration with ZO Body Emulsion
Will I receive extractions?

If clogged pores or blackheads are present, your aesthetician can perform gentle extractions to help clear congestion. If your skin doesn’t require extractions, the treatment will focus on hydration, exfoliation, and restoring your skin barrier.

What is high-frequency therapy?

High-frequency is a gentle treatment that uses a specialized electrode to help reduce acne-causing bacteria, calm inflammation, promote healing, and improve the appearance of blemishes. It is commonly used for acne-prone skin and is included when appropriate.

How long does the appointment take?

Most Back Facial appointments take approximately 60 minutes.

Is there any downtime?

There is little to no downtime. If extractions are performed, mild redness may occur for several hours. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately.

What should I do after my Back Facial?

For the best results, we recommend avoiding excessive sweating, hot tubs, saunas, and prolonged heat exposure for the first 24 hours after your treatment. Wear loose-fitting clothing if possible and follow any personalized aftercare instructions provided by your aesthetician.

How often should I have a Back Facial?

Many patients benefit from treatments every 4–6 weeks for maintenance. If you’re addressing active breakouts or congestion, your provider may recommend a series of treatments along with a customized at-home skincare routine.

Can I receive a Back Facial if I have active acne?

Yes. In fact, this treatment is one of our favorite ways to help improve acne on the back. Your treatment will be customized based on the severity of your breakouts, and active blemishes may be treated with high-frequency therapy and targeted professional products.

Should I wax before my appointment?

If you receive back waxing, we recommend scheduling your Back Facial before waxing or waiting several days afterward to minimize irritation.

Do I need to stop using retinol or acne medications?

If you use prescription-strength retinoids, tretinoin, or other acne medications on your back, let your provider know before your appointment. Depending on your treatment plan, we may recommend pausing these products for several days beforehand to reduce skin sensitivity.

Will I need skincare at home?

Healthy skin is maintained between treatments. You’re welcome to bring your current skincare products, and we’ll review them with you. We may recommend a customized ZO Skin Health body regimen or, when appropriate, prescription-based therapies from one of our nurse practitioners to help you achieve and maintain your healthiest skin.
